I started building communities while I was in high school, sometime in the mid-2000s, when I somehow managed to capture the domain “QBasic.com” and revive a slowly-withering niche programming community for a few tumultuous years.
Soon after that initial trial-by-fire experience I stumbled upon an interesting issue of PLAY Magazine at a bookstore. It included a tiny preview of about a new MMO from NCsoft called Aion. I immediately rode my bike home (no car back then, just a kid) and began work on a new community that would become my life for the next few years… AionSource.com, the largest Aion fansite on the internet.
Keeping AionSource.com afloat and active for three years while NCsoft “localized” Aion was no easy feat. Eventually my efforts were noticed by a certain company out of San Francisco and they offered to help me out. It took all my courage, resourcefulness, and adaptability to learn how to run a fansite of the highest calibur, but I succeeded. Even now, a couple years after I reluctantly relinquished my administrator duties to focus on my education, AionSource.com remains a strong community.
There’s still more I need to write about, so check back again soon!
